Growing up in central Texas, you hear all about how “hard” the water is. You may have even been told that a water softener is a must or noticed chalky buildup on your faucets and fixtures. 

 

What makes water “hard” or “soft,” and why does it matter for your home’s plumbing?  Let’s take a closer look at what hard water is, how it affects your home, and what you can do about it.

 

A basic definition

When people talk about “hard” or “soft” water, they’re referring to the amount of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, found in the water.  Hard water has far more of these minerals than soft water. The type of water your home receives largely depends on the geology of your area. Limestone and dolomite rock formations are found throughout Central Texas, and as groundwater naturally flows through them, it dissolves and carries away small amounts of calcium and magnesium minerals.

 

An important distinction to understand is that hard water contains dissolved mineral ions, not visible particles or sediment.  If your mental image involves small amounts of sand in your drinking water, don’t worry, that’s not the case. We’re talking about microscopic amounts of minerals.

 

Is hard water dangerous to use or to drink?

No, hard water is perfectly safe to drink. However, it can create several inconveniences around your home. When you shower, the minerals in hard water react with your soap, making it harder to produce a rich lather and rinse it away completely.
